Fareri discussed the matter last January with Monroe County Assessor Tom Hill, pointing to discrepancies in border locations. The Polk supervisors' attorney, James Fareri, said the properties may have been taxed in Polk as recently as 1988 - the last time Monroe County conducted a comprehensive reassessment of all properties. THE PAINSTAKING survey began after Polk Township supervisors questioned why two parcels along Molasses Valley Road owned by Vernon and Berneda Frable are assessed by the county in Eldred for taxes. They have searched farm fields and woods for original stone markers and other noted landmarks - including a tavern and church destroyed years ago by fires. Their mapping adventure has included white-gloved examination of the original 19th-century survey maps and legal descriptions used to establish four West End townships - Polk, Eldred, Chestnuthill and Ross. The project could legally change the township in which dozens of property owners reside. "As far as we know it's never been done," Beers said. They hope to firmly establish the entire northern Eldred and southern Polk border through the comprehensive survey. Basila and Robert Beers, a local registered surveyor, are searching for old monuments and landmarks along the township borders, and using satellite technology to plot the landmarks' locations on maps. ![]() George Basila, a mapping analyst with the Monroe County Planning Department, was asked to help navigate a boundary dispute between Eldred and Polk townships.
